The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP) is a five year programme offered to students from Grades Six to Ten since 1997 on our Melbourne Senior Campus. It is a student-centered program, which encourages our students to draw connections between eight subject groups while striving to have a positive impact on those in their local and global communities.

The curriculum is linked together by six Global Contexts, which form a natural bridge between subject disciplines and offers differing conceptual perspectives. The MYP Programme offers students excellence in academics, co-curricular activities and opportunity for personal development through the completion of the Personal Project in Year 10, ensuring their growth as active and informed global citizens.

MYP Learner Profile

Assessment in the MYP

The learning success of Middle School students is measured against a criterion-related assessment system developed by the International Baccalaureate Organization. Each subject, interdisciplinary unit and projects within the MYP has a set of criteria used to measure student success.

Assessment in the MYP aims to:

  • support and encourage student learning by providing feedback on the learning process
  • inform, enhance and improve the teaching process
  • provide opportunity for students to exhibit transfer of skills across disciplines, such as in the personal project and interdisciplinary unit assessments
  • promote positive student attitudes towards learning
  • promote a deep understanding of subject content by supporting students in their inquiries set in real-world contexts
  • promote the development of critical- and creative-thinking skills
  • reflect the international-mindedness of the programme by allowing assessments to be set in a variety of cultural and linguistic contexts
  • support the holistic nature of the programme by including in its model principles that take account of the development of the whole student.

Service as Action

Service as Action (SA) is a required component of IBMYP and its aim is to develop internationally minded individuals who can recognize their shared common humanity and responsibility to take care of the planet. It is also to connect what is learned in school to the real world.

The ultimate aim as a school and community is to create life-long memories and experiences that lay the foundation for future learning. It provides students with opportunities for helping the school, local, and international communities and it also:

Helps students apply academic, personal, and social skills to improve community.
Develops an awareness to make a positive difference in the lives of others.
Encourages responsible citizenship by increasing students understanding of the world.
Allows the student to discover new skills, talents, and interests.
Helps students develop as leaders who take initiative.

Portfolio (for years 6-9)

The portfolio is an essential part of the MYP curriculum and allows students to show their growth within a year. It is a collection of work that they have chosen to keep and share with their parents. There will be 5 areas that are evident:

1. Learner Profile – reflect on the students experiences in and outside of school and how these demonstrate the attributions of the IB Learner Profile

2. Service –Reflect on the students efforts to improve the lives of others. This work may be in school or in the community at large.

3. Academic Progress – Reflect on the students' work in the MYP subject groups. What are their strengths? What needs to be improved?

4. Approaches to Learning (ATL) – Reflect on students skills in the essential areas of Communication, Social, Self-management, Research and Thinking.
